I started using ChatGPT in late 2022 when most people had no idea yet what this was all about. I don’t think that AI is evil but I do believe that we are using it in the wrong way. Similar to social media actually. There’s nothing social about social media and now it’s flooded by AI content. I’ve been a huge Elvis Presley for decades and when fake Elvis videos and images started to appear,  I was shocked. I read a lot of comments and saw that about 80% of the people who commented believed that those videos and images were real. Elvis Presley died in 1977 and as a hardcore fan, you know at once what’s real and what’s fake. However, I wouldn’t know this for other celebrities. I mean, what kind of world are we creating where we no longer can be sure what’s real and what’s not? 

I always thought AI would be great to help humans with boring tasks such as processing and summarizing data and texts or even for brainstorming. Instead, we let it do tasks that will destroy our human creativity and independent thinking in the long run. 

And language learning? Be careful when you use AI. I create grammar and vocabulary exercises with the help of ChatGPT but I give precise instructions and check the results. Believe me, AI makes mistakes with grammar and use of vocabulary. I’ve watched AI-created videos for German learners which were simply horrific (= full of mistakes) and the people who posted did not bother to edit and correct anything. I talked with teachers of my target languages (Portuguese, Hungarian, Russian) and they all say the same. 

AI won’t go away but everyone needs to make a decision how to use it. I decided that I don’t want AI to take over. It means that I’m slower than creators who use AI for everything but it also means that my content is genuine. I believe that this is good for my brain but also for people like you who are hopefully looking for content created by humans and for humans.
