Es ist Freitagabend. Morgen hat Paula Geburtstag. Paula möchte keine Geburtstagsfeier, aber ihre Familie hat eine Überraschung für sie vorbereitet.
Paula und ihr Mann Joachim sitzen im Wohnzimmer und sehen fern.
„Hat es unten geklingelt?“, fragt Paula plötzlich. „Ich glaube, ich habe etwas gehört.“
„Nein, ich habe nichts gehört“, antwortet Joachim.
„Okay.“ Die beiden sehen weiter fern.
Unten öffnet Luise die Haustür. Dort stehen ihre Söhne Steffen und Michael. Steffen ist mit dem Auto aus Berlin gekommen und hat Michael vom Flughafen abgeholt.
„Kommt leise rein“, sagt Luise.
Am nächsten Morgen will Paula wie immer um 9:30 Uhr zu ihrer Mutter und Großmutter gehen, aber Joachim hält sie zurück.
„Warte noch. Jana hat eine Überraschung für dich“, sagt Joachim.
Joachim und Jana wissen, dass Paulas Brüder da sind. Sie wissen auch, dass um zehn Uhr Freunde von Paula kommen. Deshalb darf Paula jetzt nicht nach unten gehen.
„Einen Moment, Mama“, sagt Jana. „Gleich darfst du in mein Zimmer kommen.“
Aber es dauert. Natürlich lässt Jana ihre Mutter absichtlich warten. Um 10 Uhr kommt Jana aus ihrem Zimmer, aber sie schließt die Tür.
„Lass uns Oma und Uroma auch holen“, sagt sie.
„Wo ist Papa?“, fragt Paula.
„Keine Ahnung, vielleicht auf dem Klo.“
Jana nimmt die Hand ihrer Mutter und zieht sie zur Wohnungstür. Sie gehen die Treppe herunter. Als sie Luises Wohnzimmer betreten, warten dort ihre Familie und ihre Freunde und fangen an zu singen, als sie Paula sehen. Auf dem Tisch steht ein großer Geburtstagskuchen mit Kerzen und es gibt viel leckeres Essen für einen gemütlichen Brunch.
Paula ist gerührt. Sie kann es nicht glauben, als sie Michael und Steffen sieht.
„Ihr seid extra aus Berlin und London gekommen?“
„Natürlich. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag“, sagt Michael.
Paula bekommt viele Geschenke: Bücher, Schmuck, Kleidung, Parfüm und einen Gutschein für ein Wellness-Wochenende von ihren Brüdern.

It’s Friday evening. Tomorrow is Paula’s birthday. Paula doesn’t want a birthday party, but her family has prepared a surprise for her.
Paula and her husband Joachim are sitting in the living room watching TV.
“Did the doorbell ring downstairs?” Paula suddenly asks. “I think I heard something.”
“No, I didn’t hear anything,” replies Joachim.
“Okay.” The two continue to watch TV.
Downstairs, Luise opens the front door. Her sons Steffen and Michael are standing there. Steffen has come by car from Berlin and picked Michael up from the airport.
“Come in quietly,” says Luise.
The next morning, Paula wants to go to her mother and grandmother as usual at 9:30 a.m., but Joachim holds her back.
“Wait a little longer. Jana has a surprise for you,” says Joachim.
Joachim and Jana know that Paula’s brothers are there. They also know that Paula’s friends are coming at ten o’clock. That’s why Paula isn’t allowed to go downstairs now.
“Just a moment, Mom,” says Jana. “You can come into my room in a minute.”
But it takes a while. Of course, Jana deliberately makes her mother wait. At 10 o’clock, Jana comes out of her room, but she closes the door.
“Let’s get grandma and great-grandma, too,” she says.
“Where’s Dad?” asks Paula.
“No idea, maybe in the loo.”
Jana takes her mother’s hand and pulls her towards the front door. They go down the stairs. When they enter Luise’s living room, her family and friends are waiting there and start singing when they see Paula. There is a big birthday cake with candles on the table and lots of delicious food for a nice brunch.
Paula is touched. She can’t believe it when she sees Michael and Steffen.
“You’ve come all the way from Berlin and London?”
“Of course. Happy birthday,” says Michael.
Paula receives lots of presents: books, jewelry, clothes, perfume and a voucher for a spa weekend from her brothers.

If a German’s birthday is on a Monday, he won’t have a party the weekend before but the next weekend. I had never really thought about it until I noticed that in many Latin American countries, they’re more practical with this. It’s a bit of superstition, of course. Brings bad luck to celebrate your birthday before the actual date.
